Geography
Shawnee is located at 39°0′46″N, 94°45′57″W(39.012767, -94.765818). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 110.2 km² (42.5 mi²). 108.1 km² (41.7 mi²) of it is land and 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it (1.88%) is water.
The Census estimate from 2003 is one indication. Shawnee’s
estimated population of 54,093 represented a significant increase
since 2000 and made Shawnee the seventh largest city and fourth fastest growing, in both the State of Kansas and the Kansas City metropolitan area. Between 1960 and 2000, Shawnee grew by 429 percent, more than double the 213 percent of Johnson County and nearly 10 times the 46 percent of metropolitan Kansas City.
Transportation and location are keys. Shawnee is located between Interstate 35 on the east and K-7 Highway on the west. Major routes such as Interstate 435 and other nearby arteries connect the city to all regions of the metropolitan area, as well as the nation.
For movement within the metro, Shawnee is only 17 minutes from downtown Kansas City and 12 minutes from Corporate Woods. Shawnee is also just 30 minutes from Kansas City International Airport and only 15 minutes from the New Century AirCenter.
Because Johnson County is home to one of the best educated
workforces in the country, Shawnee can boast
a labor pool that is one of the best in the nation. Local
businesses have been documented to draw labor from
a 20-county area, consisting of over 1.2 million workers.
All of these benefits have resulted in dynamic business
development. In the past year,
more than 28 new and expanding
companies initiated $40 million
in estimated capital investment,
including more than
$31 million and 233,000 square
feet in new construction. Along
with 293,000 square feet of
absorbed existing space, these
developments created more
than 500 new job opportunities
for area residents.
This development reflects a
healthy diversity. Projects moving
forward have included light
industrial, office and retail
development. Construction starts
are appearing in new and
established areas of the community
and a remarkable revitalization of Shawnee’s
downtown area is taking place.
Active projects are too numerous to list, but notable
developments include the new three-story, 102,000
square foot headquarters for Perceptive Software, Inc., in
the Shawnee Crossings office park; a new 243,000
square foot distribution center on Bayer HeathCare,
LLC’s North American headquarters campus; and the
188,000 square foot Woodsonia West Shopping Center
on the K-7 Highway corridor.
Quality of life in Shawnee is as high as it is diverse. Older, tree-lined neighborhoods and new subdivisions
offer a range of prices and lifestyles. Education here is excellent, with nationally recognized public school systems, including the Shawnee Mission and De Soto School Districts. Both school districts have received national recognition for educational excellence. The region’s numerous colleges and universities provide Shawnee residents with diverse opportunities for advanced education and training.
